The fitting time may be allowed for, but not the access, setup or paperwork. The main materials may be listed, but not the delivery, waste or small items. Plant, subcontractors, permits and disposal can sit outside the first rough figure.

A single total can hide where the price came from. Sections separate different stages, rooms, systems or work packages — and make scope changes easier to explain.

Each section holds its own labour, materials and other costs while still feeding one job total.
Labour
Build labour from time, not memory
A labour allowance should reflect more than the visible fitting task.
The calculator can start from fit time, multiply it by quantity, then apply site uplift and additional labour where the job creates extra time.
Example: ten items at 30 minutes each create 5 hours of fit time. A 20% site uplift increases that to 6 hours. An extra hour for setup, testing and close-out gives 7 total labour hours. The internal cost and customer value are then calculated from the hourly rates entered.
Materials
Include the true material cost
The supplier price is only the starting point. Where needed, include consumables, waste, delivery and ordering time before the material selling price is calculated.
Markup vs margin
Markup and margin produce different prices
Markup is based on cost. Margin is based on the selling price. With a true job cost of £10,000:
20% markup
Selling price £12,000 and a gross margin of 16.7%. Markup adds a set percentage to the cost.
20% target margin
Selling price £12,500 — equivalent to a 25% markup. Margin sets gross profit as a percentage of the final selling price.
The calculator shows both figures so there is no hidden conversion between the two methods.
