Who sends a remittance advice, and why
A remittance advice goes from the payer to the payee — from you to your supplier or subcontractor — to confirm you've paid and, crucially, which invoices the payment covers.
When you settle several invoices in one payment, it saves the payee guessing. They can tick off exactly what's been paid and chase only what hasn't.

Remittance advice, receipt or invoice?
Three documents people mix up.
Remittance advice (payer → payee)
“I've paid you, and here's what it covers.” Sent by whoever makes the payment, listing the invoices settled.
Invoice / receipt (payee → payer)
An invoice requests payment; a receipt confirms one was received. Both come from the party being paid — the opposite direction to a remittance advice.
Handy when you pay subcontractors
If you pay subcontractors under CIS, a remittance advice alongside the payment tells them which invoices you've settled — and pairs with the payment and deduction statement that shows the CIS you withheld.
Together they give the subcontractor a clear picture of the payment behind the deduction.
