The problem

Most CIS tools forget the VAT bit

Search for a CIS invoice tool and you'll find plenty that deduct the tax — but treat VAT as a normal line. Since the 2021 rules, that quietly produces non-compliant invoices.

On construction work between VAT-registered businesses, the VAT domestic reverse charge usually applies: you don't charge VAT at all. Get that wrong and the payment gets queried.

This tool builds the reverse charge AND the CIS deduction into the same invoice.

Reverse charge and CIS — both handled, on one invoice.
Reverse charge

Why your invoice shows £0 VAT — on purpose

Under the VAT domestic reverse charge, the subcontractor doesn't charge VAT — the contractor accounts for it to HMRC instead. So the amount you're paid carries no VAT.

The invoice must say so clearly — “Reverse charge: customer to account for the VAT to HMRC” — and show the VAT that would have applied, for reference, without adding it to the total.

The deduction

CIS comes off labour, not the lot

The CIS deduction applies to the labour element only — 20% if you're registered, 30% if not, 0% with gross status. Materials, plant hire, consumables and VAT all sit outside it.

Tag each line as labour or materials and the deduction lands on the right amount, with the split shown clearly on the invoice.

Both at once

Reverse charge + CIS on one invoice

Both rules apply together. Example: £2,000 labour + £500 materials = £2,500 subtotal. Under reverse charge you add no VAT (and note the £500 that would apply at 20% for the customer). With CIS at 20% on labour, £400 is deducted — so £2,100 is payable.

The tool does this maths as you type, so the net payable is right before you send it.

Honest limits

A document aid, not your accountant

This generates a compliant invoice — it doesn't send it, take payment or file with HMRC. The reverse charge doesn't apply when the customer is an end user or intermediary, when either party isn't VAT-registered, or when the work is zero-rated or outside CIS.

Check the status before relying on reverse-charge wording. The VAT and CIS rules here were verified against HMRC guidance (2026), but rates and rules change — confirm your own position.
