The problem

Half these "receipts" are actually invoices

The template galleries that rank blur the line between an invoice and a receipt — some even show invoice layouts on a ‘receipt’ page. They're US-generic, and none explains what a UK receipt (or VAT receipt) needs.

A receipt does one job: prove money was received. This builds that — clearly a receipt, not a request for payment.

A receipt is proof of payment. An invoice is a request for it.
The wedge

Paid in full — or balance still to run

Trades take deposits and part-payments, so a receipt often isn't the end of it. This one marks the payment ‘paid in full’ or shows the balance remaining against the total.

And if you're VAT-registered, it captures the details a VAT receipt needs, so the customer can reclaim correctly.

Get it right

Invoice vs receipt

Invoice

Sent before payment — a request for the amount due, with your terms.

Receipt

Given after payment — proof the money was received, for the customer’s records.

This tool builds the receipt. Need to bill first? Use the invoice generator.

When it doesn’t clear the balance

Taking a deposit or a stage payment? Switch off ‘paid in full’, enter the total, and the receipt shows exactly how much is left to pay.

That keeps everyone clear on where the account stands after each payment.

Honest limits

A receipt, not tax advice

This creates a receipt to give a customer — it doesn't take the payment, chase it, or file anything. Whether VAT applies, and at what rate, depends on your registration and the supply.

It's a document aid, not tax advice — confirm your own VAT position.
