The problem

Every "template" is a static form

The risk assessment templates that rank are static — HSE's own Word document, gov.uk files, university PDFs, or a consultancy form gated behind a lead-capture. You still do the risk-rating maths by hand.

This is interactive: enter the hazard and rate likelihood and severity, and it works out the risk score and flags the high ones for you.

Record the assessment — the tool does the rating maths.
The wedge

Likelihood × severity, scored automatically

Give each hazard a likelihood (1–5) and a severity (1–5) and the tool multiplies them into a risk rating, colour-flagged low, medium or high, so the priorities jump out.

Then record the further controls and the residual risk, with an owner and a review date — the loop HSE expects.

HSE’s 5 steps

Structured the way HSE tells you to

1

Identify the hazards

What could cause harm on this task.

2

Assess the risks

Who might be harmed, how likely and how serious — rate it.

3

Control the risks

Eliminate the hazard or put controls in place.

4

Record & review

Record the findings, then review after changes or incidents.

Based on HSE's five steps to risk assessment (checked Aug 2026).
Do you need a written one?

When it has to be in writing

Everyone must assess the risks of their work. You must record the significant findings in writing if you employ five or more people — and even below that, a written record is the simplest way to show you've done it.

A competent person must carry out the assessment; this tool records it, it doesn't make the judgements for you.

Trade-specific & RAMS

Working at height, construction, electrical — and method statements

Use it for the hazards trades actually face — working at height, construction, electrical, hot works, roofing and more — adding the hazards and controls that fit the task.

Pair the finished risk assessment with a method statement and you have a RAMS — the risk assessment and method statement package many principal contractors ask for.

Honest limits

A recording aid, not H&S advice

This helps a competent person record a risk assessment — it doesn't assess your site, choose your controls, or constitute health-and-safety or legal advice. The judgements are yours.

It follows HSE's five-step method (checked August 2026), but you must make sure the assessment genuinely reflects the task, and review it when things change.
